ABOUT THE SINCERITY PROJECT
Beginning in 2014 (and concluding in 2038), The Sincerity Project is a 24-year iterative performance experiment that captures the passage of time and its impact on the bodies, minds, and emotions of a group of individuals over two and half decades. The project gathers the same ensemble of creator-performers every two-to-three years to develop a new installment, each its own original devised work of theater that reflects the changes in the ensemble’s lives and in the world. Sincerity is an attempt to create a space for both personal and communal reflection by returning to each other and to the theater, ultimately inviting its artists and audience to sincerely engage with the harrowing, beautiful, and complex realities that come with time’s passing.
An ambitious and audacious undertaking, each unique installment serves as a kind of creative archiving practice, inviting both the performers and audience, whom we affectionately refer to as “the village,” to mark the passage of time. Alongside each installment’s performance, audience members are invited to write “letters to future selves,” which we hold onto until the next installment.
The Sincerity Project is a truly original endeavor. Sometimes referred to as the experimental theater world’s “Boyhood” or “7-Up Series” (a film and TV series that capture the passage of time over many years), no other live performance activity has aimed to gather the same community of artists and audience for two and half decades.
